PocketMika

Help. Set up, use, fix.

Everything you need to get PocketMika typing for you. Can’t find it here? Email support@voicekey.ca.

Set it up

PocketMika needs two switches turned on in your phone’s Settings. The app opens the right place and shows each tap. If you’d rather do it yourself:

1. Let the bubble float over your apps

  1. In PocketMika, tap Open Settings on “Now take me everywhere.”
  2. Turn on the switch next to PocketMikaThe list is called “Appear on top” or “Display over other apps”.
  3. Go back to PocketMikaIt moves on by itself.

2. Let it type for you

On a Samsung phone:

  1. Open Settings, then Accessibility
  2. Tap Installed appsIt’s near the bottom of the page.
  3. Tap PocketMika
  4. Turn on the top switchNot the one called “PocketMika shortcut” under it.
  5. Tap Allow

On a Pixel and most other phones:

  1. Open Settings, then Accessibility
  2. Tap PocketMikaIt’s under “Downloaded apps”.
  3. Turn on “Use PocketMika”
  4. Tap Allow

This is how your words land in any box. PocketMika never presses Send, never touches password boxes, and keeps no audio once your words land.

Android says “Restricted setting”

Android shows this when an app was installed from a file instead of Google Play. It’s normal, and one switch fixes it.

  1. Tap OK on the “Restricted setting” message
  2. Open your phone’s Settings, then Apps, then PocketMika
  3. Tap ⋮ at the top right
  4. Tap Allow restricted settingsYour phone may ask for your PIN or fingerprint.
  5. Go back to PocketMika and tap Open Settings again
Don’t see “Allow restricted settings”? It only appears after Android has shown you the “Restricted setting” message once. Try to turn PocketMika on first, then look again.

Use the bubble

Talk

Tap into any text box so your keyboard comes up. Hold the bubble, say what you want to write, and let go. Rather not hold? Tap to start and tap again to finish.

Change what you wrote

Say the change: “make it shorter”, “change Friday to Saturday”, “add a fire emoji”. Start with your bubble’s name to tell it what to do: “Mika, make it friendlier.” A plain message or a question that starts with its name is usually still typed.

Reply without typing

In an empty message box, say how you want to answer: “reply yes, and ask what to bring”. PocketMika reads the chat on screen and writes the reply. You still press Send.

Undo

Say “nope” or “undo that” and the message goes back to how it was.

Throw a take away

While you’re still holding, slide to the bin. Nothing is typed.

Move it or put it to sleep

Drag the bubble to either edge of the screen. Drop it on the sleep spot when you want it gone for a while.

Something’s wrong

I don’t see the bubble

The bubble shows when your keyboard is up, so tap into a text box first. If it still isn’t there, open PocketMika and check that “Show the bubble” is on, that the app you’re in isn’t under “Hide it in these apps”, and that both permissions say Allowed.

It heard me but nothing was typed

Some apps don’t let other apps type into them. PocketMika keeps your words and shows a Copy button so you can paste them in.

It says it didn’t hear anything

Check that PocketMika may use the microphone: open PocketMika, go to You, and look under Permissions.

I have no connection

PocketMika needs the internet to turn your voice into text. If you’re offline, your recording waits on your phone for up to about two hours and is sent when you’re back online.

It typed my instruction instead of doing it

Say your bubble’s name first, then the change: “Mika, make it shorter.” The name tells it an instruction is coming.
